Despite some
outstanding exceptions, why is there
so much poverty, and crime, in the
Caribbean and among Caribbean Peoples?
There have been many expert evaluations of the reasons and recommendations
for corrective action but with very little or no results to show. It is
probably a statement of our commitment as Caribbean Peoples that, nearly
five decades after political independence, we have not come any closer
to having economic independence. Many people have formed the opinion that
there are two root causes to this persistent poverty, social disruption
and crime. One is the ‘scare benefits and spoils’ mindset that
drives our brand of divisive politics. In a sense, it appears that our
politicians are still fighting among themselves for political independence
(which we already have) versus the economic independence which we need.
The other root cause may be our education system whose policies may not
be entirely responsive to our special developmental needs as ex-colonised
peoples in a global and digital world. These special needs relate to building
our self image, new societal and work ethic relationships, and an entrepreneurial
and ‘can do’ mindset.
What is meant
by the term ‘investment literacy’?
The term speaks to the ability to understand the language of money, investing
and wealth creation on somewhat the same level that we understand the language
of labrish, sus, story-telling, cricket and football. When one has this
facility, he/she will more-or-less understand the workings of money and
be more able to pursue the strategies which are likely to generate wealth.
There probably are many reasons but all within our control. Some of these
may be
a) No culture in long-term saving our entrepreneurship
b) No appreciation for inter-generational wealth creation
c) Very little, if any help at all, from our Education System in either
a) or b) above
What does
the term ‘wealth creation’ mean?
This term means setting up a deliberate framework or foundation on which
to pursue wealth building strategies not just for oneself, but for children
and grand children into posterity
